Dental emergencies can strike at the worst possible time—during dinner, on vacation, or before a big event. Whether it’s a knocked-out tooth, severe toothache, or broken crown, staying calm and acting quickly is the most important thing. At Douglas Hoppe DDS in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, we understand how stressful dental emergencies can be, which is why we’re here to guide you through them. Knowing what to do in those critical first moments can make all the difference in saving your smile.
Here are five essential steps to follow during a dental emergency:
The first and most important step is to take a deep breath and stay calm. Determine the nature of the emergency—are you bleeding, in severe pain, or missing a tooth? Panic can make the situation feel worse than it is. By calmly identifying the issue, you’ll be better equipped to take the right next steps and communicate clearly with your dental team.
If you’re experiencing bleeding due to trauma, rinse your mouth gently with warm water and apply gauze or a clean cloth to the area with light pressure. This is especially important in cases of tooth or gum injury. If bleeding persists after 10-15 minutes, or if the injury is severe, it’s time to seek emergency dental care in Eaton Rapids as soon as possible.
If a tooth has been knocked out, time is critical. Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), gently rinse off any dirt, and try to place it back into the socket if possible. If that’s not an option, store it in a container of milk or saliva to keep it moist. Bring it with you to our office immediately. The sooner you act, the higher the chances we can save the tooth.
Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling, and take over-the-counter pain medication (such as acetaminophen) if needed. Avoid aspirin, as it can thin your blood and increase bleeding. Never apply medication directly to the affected area unless instructed by a dentist.
