Nitrous oxide, aka laughing gas, is the mildest form of sedation in dentistry. At the office of Douglas Hoppe, DDS, in Eaton Rapids, Michigan, we use nitrous to help our patients relax for dental procedures. Nitrous during dental work produces a euphoric effect that relieves nervousness or fear when visiting the dentist. These FAQs from our patients explain more about nitrous oxide and how it’s used.
Nitrous oxide is an odorless, colorless gas used by dentists to help patients relax during dental procedures. The gas is administered through a mask placed over your nose. Dr. Hoppe will control the flow of the gas throughout your procedure to keep you calm, relaxed, and comfortable.Â
You’ll feel the effects of nitrous for as long as the gas continues. After the gas flow has been discontinued, it takes about 5 to 10 minutes for the effects to diminish. As the effects wear off fairly quickly, you can drive yourself home after your procedure.
Yes. When administered by a dental specialist like Dr. Hoppe, nitrous can be safely used for children over the age of 3 years. If your child has a hard time sitting still or is fearful of dental visits, nitrous makes it easier for your little one to receive the dental care he or she needs.
Dr. Hoppe recommends eating a light snack or meal several hours before your dental appointment to avoid nausea. After your procedure, you can eat and drink like normal. If a local anesthetic was used in addition to nitrous, it’s best to wait until the effects of the anesthesia have worn off before eating.
Dental nitrous isn’t recommended for people who suffer from COPD or substance abuse. It also shouldn’t be used if you’re in your first trimester of pregnancy. Dr. Hoppe will carefully review your medical history and the medications you’re taking before authorizing nitrous sedation.
Serious reactions to dental nitrous are rare. You may, however, experience minor side effects of nausea, fatigue, dizziness, or confusion, which are generally short-lived.
Laughing gas can effectively ease dental anxiety and fear during several dental procedures. Many of our patients find it helpful for dental cleanings, cavity-filling procedures, tooth extractions, and root canal procedures. For longer, more invasive procedures like dental implants or wisdom tooth removal, Dr. Hoppe may recommend a stronger form of sedation, such as oral consciousness or IV sedation.
